"Flat out gorgeous from beginning to end" - Twitchfilm
"One excellent action-adventure" - Beyond Hollywood
Call it Romeo and Juliet with ninjas. But not just any ninjas. Oh, no. The titular shinobi are super-powered ninjas, nurturing a range of superhuman powers in their remote and hidden villages. Fearing the power of the perpetually warring Koga and Iga shinobi clans the shogun launches a plan to subdue both, a plan that sets young lovers Gennosuke and Oboro at one another's throats, locked in a forced battle to the death with the strongest warriors of each clan at their sides.
With his fantastic cast -- including Azumi's Jo Odagiri and Versus' Tak Sakaguchi -- and an incredible eye, director Shimoyama Ten has created a film somewhere between arthouse and popcorn action flick. The film is beautifully shot with visuals to rival anything in the arthouse set, but once the swords come out it's pure entertainment. With its poisonous beauty, wires shooting from sleeves, shape shifting, time manipulation and a major character who is simply "not good at dying", Shinobi is an always inventive, always entertaining ride. - Todd Brown
