SYNOPSIS
THE REBEL is the passion project of writer/producer/star/action choreographer Johnny Nguyen, the Vietnamese-American stuntman fight fans know from roles opposite Jet Li (HERO, FEARLESS) and Tony Jaa (ONG-BAK, THE PROTECTOR) and whose behind-the-scenes work ranges from the SPIDER-MAN films to JARHEAD.
Le Van Cuong is, arguably a traitor to his own people. A secret policeman working in cooperation with the French forces occupying Vietnam in the 1920s it is Le’s job to root out opposition forces, to quell the brewing rebellion by any means necessary. He does his job with cold efficiency until one day, spattered with blood from a would-be assassin slain by his own hand, and confronted with the brutal torture of the captured daughter of the rebel leader by his fellow agents, Le begins to question whether he’s on the right side of this battleā¦
With a resume like Nguyen’s it’s no surprise that the fights are plentiful and impressive. What is a little more surprising, though, is the quality character work and cinematography – elements that raise THE REBEL head and shoulders above your average martial arts picture.
