Greetings Cinemaniacs!

SAME GREAT FEST, 2 MONTHS EARLIER THIS YEAR!

It is with great excitement that I can finally reveal to you today that the 2009 dates of Toronto After Dark Film Festival will be August 14-21, 2009. That’s right, Toronto’s premier festival of new horror, sci-fi, action and cult movies returns to thrill fans a whole two months earlier this year! We plan to do for fans in Summer what we’ve done in the Fall the past three years: blow your cinematic minds!

RESPONDING TO FAN DEMAND, MOVING TO SUMMER

I know some of you will be wondering about the reason for our move to August. Making Toronto After Dark as accessible as possible for fans has always been a big part of our goal. But since we launched in 2006 we’ve had significant feedback that the Fall is a difficult time of year for a large number of festivalgoers to attend a week-long film festival. So last year we polled over 800 fans in two audience surveys on this issue. An overwhelming majority declared they would be able to come out to more movies at Toronto After Dark if we were to run our film festival in Summer versus Fall. Finally, we settled on the third week of August as event-wise it is a relatively quiet week for people in the city.

I know that while many Toronto After Dark fans will be delighted with our move to Summer, some will be disappointed. But I hope that all past attendees, regardless of the time of year, will continue to check out our annual showcase of thrilling independent and international cinema. 2009: BIGGER AND BETTER THAN EVER!

Now what can you expect with our 4th Annual Festival of New Horror, Sci-Fi, Action and Cult Movies? Well this year Toronto After Dark fans can look forward to what promises to be our biggest and best line-up of films ever! Later this February we’ll be announcing our Call for Film Entries. Based on last year’s haul which included such cinematic gems as LET THE RIGHT ONE IN, I SELL THE DEAD, REPO: THE GENETIC OPERA, TOKYO GORE POLICE and TREEVENGE we expect the quality of films sent in to Toronto After Dark to continue to climb. The early word from scouts at this year’s Sundance is exciting to say the least!

We’ll be keeping to our popular eight night format at the Bloor Cinema but adding an extra movie in the week, taking our film festival to a record 17 feature film premieres and 1 collection of incredible new shorts! Despite the bigger fest and added costs we’ll be keeping the same Single Ticket and Festival Pass prices as last year. In response to fan demand we’ll also be putting our Festival Passes on sale extra early this year (March) and adding a student discount to passes.
