Short Description
THE BREAKFAST CLUB meets BACK TO THE FUTURE and SCREAM in this SXSW Film Fest hit sci-fi horror comedy about a group of high-schoolers led by Josh Hutcherson (THE HUNGER GAMES) stuck in detention on prom night, while trying to catch a serial killer - with the help of some time travel!
The Buzz
“A film that riffs equally on John Hughes and John Carpenter it intertwines the angsty, postmodern teen comedy with slasher and sci-fi elements and then ramps the speed of it all up to a dizzying pace.”
- TWITCH FILM
“Joseph Kahn’s riotously zany film won me over with its infectious mash-up of horror, science fiction and teen comedy.”
- DREAD CENTRAL
“Throws in everything and the kitchen sink and, figuring that’s not nearly enough, decides to toss a time-traveling bear into the mix….DETENTION is mesmerizing and something you definitely won’t be able to take yours eyes off.”
- BLOODY-DISGUSTING
Official Selection - SXSW, FANTASIA, SEATTLE, PARIS FILM FESTIVALS
Synopsis
Imagine if SCOTT PILGRIM VS. THE WORLD got a little buzzed one night and proceeded to fool around with Wes Craven’s SCREAM, the result, nine months later, would begin to resemble an iota of the absolutely inspired and stylish delirium that pervades the runtime of Joseph Kahn’s DETENTION.
Moving faster and more furiously then the average 16-year-old’s texts-per-minute, Kahn tosses the tropes of both slasher cinema and teen movies into a blender splattering them against a canvas of eye-popping ultra-saturated cinematography. He hyper-kinetically cuts across the misadventures of the students at Grizzly Lake High, a school besieged by bubbly body-swapping cheerleaders, half-man/half-fly/half-television hybrids, time-traveling bears from outer space, and a homicidal prom-queen named Cinderhella, with a particular penchant for killing only the “popular” girls. A pre-HUNGER GAMES Josh Hutcherson stars as the most popular kid in school, Dane Cook redeems himself as an amusingly apathetic principal, and Shanley Caswell endears as the jaded, ass-kicking cynic in all of us.
