Packed with extreme, ultraviolent fight scenes and hard-hitting action, the newest chapter of the Universal Soldier movie series has received fantastic fan reactions on the festival circuit. Action legends Dolph Lundgren and Jean-Claude Van Damme unite as leaders of a renegade army of soldiers and its up to Scott Adkins (the rising action star from EXPENDABLES 2) to track them down and defeat them.

When John Hyams was handed the keys to the UNIVERSAL SOLDIER franchise in 2009 he turned out the rock-solid REGENERATION, but with DAY OF RECKONING he pushes the property in directions so unexpected, so ambitiously radical, and so f—ked up, that the sheer audacity of the project is to be applauded. Palpably evoking, of all things, APOCALYPSE NOW and ENTER THE VOID, modern day martial arts MVP Scott Adkins (EXPENDABLES 2) plays an amnesiac, revenge-seeking soldier in search of Luc Devereux, the original Universal Soldier (Jean-Claude Van Damme), who has gone AWOL and is brewing a Col. Kurtz-style commune for renegade UNISOL clones (including a gleefully demented Dolph Lundgren) bent on revolution.
Not content with delivering merely a meat and potatoes actioner, Hyams conjures a slick blend of action, sci-fi and outright horror, doing each genre justice as he ricochets the audience between surreally hallucinogenic first-person psychodrama set-pieces, Van Damme’s most unhinged performance yet and bouts of nihilistic brutality so shocking that even the most jaded gore-hounds will be wincing with unease.
