Toronto After Dark Wraps up 2012 Film Festival with another Record Year of Cinematic Thrills!

NOVEMBER 21, 2012:   That’s a Wrap! Toronto After Dark Film Festival wrapped up its thrilling 7th Annual showcase of new Horror, Sci-Fi, Action and Cult Movies last month at the beautifully restored Bloor Hot Docs Cinema in Toronto, Canada with over 10,000 enthusiastic attendees taking in screenings and events during a record nine-night run over Oct 18-26!


Highlights of Toronto After Dark 2012 included the sell-out Canadian Premiere of the hit new British zombie comedy COCKNEYS vs ZOMBIES with over 700 screaming fans, many in costume as part of the festival’s annual Zombie Appreciation Night, comedic actor Brian Posehn (SARAH SILVERMAN SHOW) in attendance along with a horde of Live Action Role Players for the Toronto Premiere of LLOYD THE CONQUEROR,  the scintillating Soska Sisters (aka The Twisted Twins), on hand for the Canadian Premiere of their acclaimed new horror-thriller, AMERICAN MARY, and a crowd-pleasing closing night video intro specially recorded for Toronto After Dark by fan favourite Simon Pegg (SHAUN OF THE DEAD. HOT FUZZ, STAR TREK) for his new film A FANTASTIC FEAR OF EVERYTHING

Another huge hit with fans this year was Toronto After Dark’s specially commissioned limited edition 2012 t-shirt design, ‘Bloor After Dark’, illustrated by the award-winning local artist Ghoulish Gary Pullin, best known for his years of incredible design work on the acclaimed magazine Rue Morgue. Fans can read the story behind this unique tee design here. Although the tee sold out in record time, fans can look forward to another new design from Gary for our 2013 festival!


Another new initiative for Toronto After Dark 2012, was the launch of our first-ever Indie Video Game Showcase, THE DARKCADE. Tying in thematically with the main film festival, over 50 new horror, sci-fi. action and cult indie video games were submitted and the best 18 were showcased, two a night, during the course of the fest at our popular after-screening nightly social event, Pub After Dark. 


In the awards stakes, Genre comedies won audiences over at Toronto After Dark 2012 with the crowd-pleasing British gangsters meets zombies action comedy COCKNEYS VS ZOMBIES winning the festival’s Top Prize, the Audience Choice Award for Best Feature Film, GOLD. In the Specialty Categories, the big winner was the stylish surgical horror thriller AMERICAN MARY from the Soska Twins which won 6 Awards including Best Director, Best Actress and Best Canadian Feature. Films screening at Toronto After Dark 2012 also benefited from the over 100 press and industry representatives in attendance. The result was a new record, a staggering 500-plus published reviews and editorial pieces for our 20 feature films, 29 short films, and the festival overall. Even more importantly for our selected filmmakers, multiple sales deals to distributors occurred around and during the festival itself!

First Films Announced for Toronto After Dark 2012!

Toronto After Dark Film Festival is thrilled to officially unveil its first wave of exciting film announcements for 2012! Toronto After Dark’s New Films and T-Shirt Design a HUGE Hit at the Festival of Fear at Fan Expo!

Team After Dark had a blast at the recent Rue Morgue Festival of Fear (Aug 23-26), part of Fan Expo, Canada’s biggest fan event!  For some fun pictures see here. A huge thank you to the over 1,000 fans who visited our Booth to get a sneak peek at the first ten titles from our 2012 film lineup and entered to win a Free Festival ALL-ACCESS PASS worth $168! The winner has now been notified. As well as our films, another huge hit this year was a brand new monster-themed tee designed for Toronto After Dark, exclusively by award-winning artist Ghoulish Gary Pullin!  The t-shirt was so popular we plan to reissue it for sale to fans attending our main festival this Oct 18-26, 2012!

2012 Call for Film Entries Ends with over 800 Entries! Extended Deadline of July 27 Available at WAB

Toronto After Dark’s 2012 Call for Film Entries has now ended and we would like to thank the (updated) over 800 filmmakers from around the world who chose to submit their works for programming consideration by our festival this year. If you are waiting to see your status update change on the Withoutabox (WAB) submission system, please be patient as due to the number of entries, it does take additional time to update all records. Rest assured our little worker droids in the programming department will be spending the next few weeks reviewing every single one of the submitted films before we make our final selection for screening at this October’s 7th Annual Toronto After Dark Film Festival.

Filmmakers please note these key 2012 & 2013 Deadlines and dates for submissions & processing:  JULY 27, 11.59 PM, PST: 2012 Extended Submission Deadline. You can submit your film by this deadline exclusively at Withoutabox.com here. AUG 3: Screener Delivery Deadline, if mailing a DVD screener it must arrive by this date. Please follow the Delivery Instructions on our page at Withoutabox if you used their system, or if you submitted directly, follow the instructions on our site here. LATE AUG: You will receive a Confirmation Email from Toronto After Dark of your film being processed. END AUG: Half the feature films selected and announced on site. END SEPT: Remaining feature films and all short films selected and announced on site.

SUMMER SCREENINGS WRAP-UP: V/H/S Sells Out! Audience Choice Award to JUAN OF THE DEAD!

A huge thank you to the many fans and supporters who came out for Toronto After Dark’s first-ever Summer Screening series and made them such a success! Over two thrilling nights at the Bloor Hot Docs Cinema, June 27 and July 11,  fans were treated to a mini-festival experience with four hugely buzzed new genre films:  Cuban Zombie Comedy JUAN OF THE DEAD, supernatural thriller THE PACT, sci-fi horror comedy DETENTION, and finally, the Canadian Premiere of the anticipated scary found footage film, V/H/S which played to a sell-out crowd of over 700. The votes have been tallied and we can now declare the Winner of the Toronto After Dark AUDIENCE CHOICE AWARD for BEST SUMMER SCREENING FILM is JUAN OF THE DEAD, with the Runner-Up DETENTION. Thanks to all the fans that voted, and congratulations to the filmmakers!
