Best friends Matt and Owen are planing a movie about wreaking vengeance on their high-school’s bullies that they collectively refer to as “The Dirties” in a form of cinematic catharsis; an airing out of their teenage anxieties and pent-up rage against the individuals that seem to pick on them for simply being their awkward, geeky, movie-loving selves. The problem is Matt keeps claiming that he wants it to be real, that he literally wants to kill all the “bad guys” in his life, leaving Owen to worry that his friend may be on a terrible trajectory.
But THE DIRTIES remarkably balances this profound real-world darkness with an exuberant celebration of the infectious wonder of movie culture through a dizzying array of densely packed references and riffs, some endearingly familiar or ultra-contemporary (PULP FICTION, THE DARK KNIGHT RISES) and others hysterically eccentric (MALCOLM X, IRREVERSIBLE, BOY MEETS WORLD). For anyone who has ever obsessed over movies and endured high-school, it is hard not to relate to or at least recognize the passion and camaraderie of the protagonists, and director Matt Johnson’s aesthetic employment of a faux-documentary style that mixes improvisatory performances with the reactions of real people caught unawares (quite similar to his popular Toronto-based web series NIRVANA: THE BAND: THE SHOW) only further enhances the realism of this comic, but pitch black MAN BITES DOG-inspired coming of age story.
